Should you clip your own videos or hire someone?

You can absolutely clip your own videos. Lots of creators do. The question isn't whether you can, it's whether it's the best use of your week.
Short answer: clip it yourself if you have a few hours a week, a free AI tool, and an audience that's still small. Hand it off when clipping starts eating the time you'd spend making the long videos, or when you need clips to reach people who don't follow you yet. That second part, distribution, is the bit that's hardest to do alone.
What clipping really takes each week
Roughly, for a creator posting 2 clips a day:
| Task | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Finding moments | Rewatching or reading transcripts, marking what stands alone |
| Cutting | Hook first, trimming, vertical crop |
| Captions | Timing, placement, fixing errors |
| Posting | Titles, tags, posting times, each platform |
| Reviewing | Checking what worked, adjusting |
None of it is hard. All of it adds up. That's 14 clips a week, every week.
What you can do alone
- Use a free AI tool to find candidate moments. See AI clipping tools vs an agency.
- Batch it. One afternoon a week for the whole week's clips.
- Keep a hook list. Write down great lines while you record.
- Post on fewer platforms until you know which ones work.
Our guide to turning a podcast into clips walks through the full process.
What's hard to do alone
- Consistency. The week you're busy is the week clips stop.
- Seeing your own content clearly. Creators often pick the moments they like, not the ones a stranger would stop for.
- Distribution. Your own accounts reach people who already follow you. To reach new people, clips need to go out on other accounts too. That needs a network of clippers, a brief, and someone checking every clip for fake views.
Signs it's time to hand it off
- Clips go out in bursts, then stop for weeks.
- You're spending more time clipping than making the long videos.
- Views on clips have flattened and you don't know why.
- You have a launch, release or tour coming and need reach fast.

Questions people ask
How long does it take to make one clip?
It varies a lot with the content and your experience. The cutting is quick with modern tools. Finding the right moment and getting the hook right is what takes time.
Should I hire a freelancer before an agency?
If you only need clips made, a freelancer can be the cheapest option. If you need strategy and distribution too, compare them properly. See hiring an editor vs an agency.
Can I clip some videos myself and hand off the rest?
Yes. Some creators keep their own clips for their main page and use a CPM campaign for reach.
What's the minimum I need to start with an agency?
Long videos you own the rights to. One hour of talk-heavy video usually gives us 12 to 20 clips.
