How to repurpose long-form video into short clips
Updated 10 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders
Every long video you've made is full of short ones. Webinars, streams, interviews, talks, podcasts, live shows. Repurposing is how you get them out.
Short answer: read the transcript or rewatch the video, mark every moment that makes sense on its own, cut each one to open on the payoff, add captions, crop to vertical, and post 1 to 2 a day across TikTok, Reels and Shorts. One hour of talk-heavy video usually gives 12 to 20 good clips, which is a week or more of daily posts.
Step 1: Find the moments
Read the transcript or scrub the video. Mark anything that would make sense to a stranger with no context. Good candidates:
- a strong opinion
- a story that ends on a line worth hearing
- a clear answer to a question your audience asks
- a disagreement between two people
- a reveal: a number, a name, something new
Step 2: Cut the hook first
Open on the payoff, not the setup. If the best line comes 40 seconds in, start close to it and add only as much context as a viewer needs.
Step 3: Format for short-form
- Vertical 9:16.
- Captions on, clear of the app's buttons.
- One idea per clip, as short as it can be while the point lands.
- Credits so people can find the full video.
Step 4: Schedule it
| Day | Clip |
|---|---|
| Monday | Strongest opinion |
| Tuesday | Best story |
| Wednesday | Clearest answer |
| Thursday | A disagreement or reaction |
| Friday | Second-best opinion |
| Weekend | Lighter moments, behind the scenes |
Step 5: Learn and repeat
After a week, look at which clips did best and why. Record the next long video with those moments in mind.
By type of video
| Video | What usually clips best |
|---|---|
| Podcasts | Stories, opinions, guest reveals |
| Streams | Big plays, reactions, chat moments |
| Webinars | Single tips and Q&A answers |
| Music | The hook, studio moments, live takes |
| Talks | The best lines, with the room's reaction |
More detail: how many clips you can get from one video.
Getting clips beyond your followers
Posting on your own accounts reaches people who already follow you. To reach new people, clips need to go out on other accounts too. That's what a clipping network does. See CPM vs retainer clipping.
Questions people ask
Do I need special software?
No. A basic editor or a free AI clipping tool is enough to start. See AI clipping tools vs an agency.
How long should repurposed clips be?
As short as possible while the point lands. Test a few lengths and keep what works.
Should I repurpose old videos?
Yes. Old videos often have great moments nobody has seen.
Can someone do this for me?
Yes. Our Entry plan is $2,000 a month for 2 clips a day on your accounts, a weekly strategy call and an idea doc.
