In-house editor or clipping agency: which does your podcast need?

Updated 9 October 2026 ยท Written by the SOVE7GN founders

Both make clips. They solve different problems. An editor gives you clips for your own channels. A clipping agency with a network gets your clips posted on accounts that aren't yours, in front of people who don't follow you yet.

Short answer: if your problem is "we don't have enough clips", hire an editor. If your problem is "our clips don't reach anyone new", that's distribution, and an editor alone won't fix it. Some shows use both.

What it costs

An in-house editor costs their pay, their tools, and the time someone on your team spends managing them. Freelance rates vary a lot by country and experience, so get a few quotes for the volume you need.

When an in-house editor makes sense

When an agency makes sense

Using both

The two don't compete. An editor keeps your own channels active. A network campaign pushes the same episodes out to many other audiences at once. If you go agency-only, a SOVE7GN retainer covers your own pages fully, and CPM clipping can run alongside it for reach.

Five questions to decide

  1. Is the problem making clips, or getting them seen?
  2. Who on your team would manage an editor, and do they have the time?
  3. How fast do clips need to go out after you record?
  4. Do you want to grow your own accounts, reach new audiences, or both?
  5. Would you rather test for a month before committing to a hire?

Still not sure? Send us an episode before a call and we'll tell you honestly which one fits. For the clipping process itself, see how to turn a podcast into short-form clips.

Questions people ask

Can a clipping agency replace an editor completely?

For your own accounts, a retainer can: our editors post 2 to 4 clips a day, with strategy calls and account management included. Shows that record daily and need same-day turnaround often still keep someone in-house.

Do I keep ownership of my episodes?

Yes. You keep ownership of everything you send us. You give us permission to cut and post it for the length of the campaign.

Is there a long contract?

Not unless you want one. Entry and Growth are month to month, and you can cancel after the first month, though we recommend 3 months. Full service has a 3-month minimum.

Not sure which you need?
