Car dealership Instagram captions by post type, and the payment words that trigger disclosures
Updated 1 November 2026 · Written by Reyansh Juneja and Naman Dhiman, the co-founders of SOVE7GN, who run the campaigns and review the clips
A car dealership Instagram caption should name the car in the first line, give two or three facts a buyer would ask about (spec, mileage, color, history), and end with one next step and the dealership name. Leave payments and rates out of captions unless you include the full disclosures, because one number such as "$899 a month" triggers federal advertising rules.
Short answer: Formula: car and hook line, three facts, one next step, dealership name. For a delivery: thank the owner (with permission) and say what they chose. Never put a monthly payment, down payment, term or "$0 down" in a caption without the disclosures that Regulation Z (12 CFR 226.24) or, for leases, Regulation M (12 CFR 213.7) require. Write "ask us about finance" instead. General information, not legal advice.
What is the caption formula for each dealership post type?
| Post type | Formula | Example (placeholders, not real cars) |
|---|---|---|
| New arrival | What it is + the one rare thing, then 3 facts, then how to see it | Just in: [year] [model] in [color], one of [number] built in this spec. [mileage] miles, one owner, full service history. DM to book a private viewing. [Dealership] |
| Delivery | Owner thanks + what they chose + why | Congratulations to [first name, with permission] on their [model]. They waited [time] for this spec and it was worth it. [Dealership] |
| Trade-in or consignment | What we want + why now | We're buying clean, low-mile [models] this month. Send us the VIN for a written offer. [Dealership] |
| Walkaround reel | The detail the video shows first | Watch for the [feature] at 0:08. [model], [mileage] miles. Full spec in the comments. [Dealership] |
| Service or detailing | The before and after + time taken | Six hours of paint correction on a [model]. Booking for [month] now. [Dealership] |
| Event | Day, time, one reason to come | Saturday 9 to 12: cars and coffee, [number] of our consignments on display. [Dealership], [address] |
| Sold | Result + where it went | Sold to a collector in [state]. Looking for something similar? Tell us the spec. [Dealership] |
Keep the first line short enough to show before "more". The rest of the facts can sit in a pinned comment for long specs.
Which caption words trigger finance disclosures?
Federal rules care about the words, not the platform. Under Regulation Z, an advertisement that states any of these "triggering terms" must also state the down payment, the terms of repayment and the annual percentage rate (12 CFR 226.24(d)):
| Trigger in the caption | Example | What else must then be stated |
|---|---|---|
| The amount or percentage of any down payment | "Only $5,000 down" | Down payment, repayment terms, APR (using that term) |
| The number of payments or period of repayment | "72-month financing" | The same three |
| The amount of any payment | "$899/mo" | The same three |
| The amount of any finance charge | "Only $1,200 in interest" | The same three |
For leases, Regulation M is triggered by "the amount of any payment" or a statement of any capitalized cost reduction or other payment, "or that no payment is required" (12 CFR 213.7(d)). The ad must then say it is a lease, the total due at or before signing, the number, amounts and due dates of payments, whether a security deposit is required, and that an extra charge may be imposed at the end of the lease.
Why 226 and not the CFPB's 1026: most dealers that sell and service vehicles fall outside the CFPB's authority, so the Federal Reserve's version of Regulation Z is usually cited for them. The trigger terms are the same in both versions. Our car dealership advertising laws page has the detail and the exceptions.
Our cautious reading: a caption cannot carry a full lease disclosure readably, so keep payments out of captions entirely and put offers on a landing page that carries the disclosures. "Ask about finance options" and "Lease and finance available" state no trigger term.
Do used car posts need anything special?
The FTC's Used Car Rule requires dealers "to display a window sticker, known as a Buyers Guide, on the used cars they offer for sale," stating whether a warranty is offered (FTC Used Car Rule, 16 CFR 455). The FTC page does not mention social media.
Our cautious reading: what the caption says about a warranty should match the Buyers Guide on the car. If the car is sold "as is", do not write "fully warrantied" or "comes with peace of mind" in the caption. And the FTC Act's ban on deceptive practices (15 U.S.C. 45) covers every caption claim: "one owner", "accident-free", "full history" must be true and documented.
How many hashtags and how long?
Up to five hashtags: Instagram began limiting posts and reels to five, rolling out gradually from December 2025, according to Social Media Today. Use the model, the make, your city and one segment tag. Length matters less than the first line: put the car and the hook there.
Where does the caption sit in the bigger plan?
Captions support the video; they do not replace it, and the profile matters too: see car dealership Instagram bio examples. A dealership that posts one walkaround a week has one caption to write. A dealership that cuts that walkaround into many reels has a caption a day, each with a different hook. Our car dealership reel ideas page shows 15 reels from one car, car dealership YouTube channel covers the weekly long videos, and luxury car dealer marketing covers the wider plan.
We write captions to these rules when we clip for dealers: one hour of long video usually gives 12 to 20 clips, posted on your own accounts daily, 2 example clips approved first, live within 48 hours. Entry is $2,000 a month for 2 clips a day. Book a 30-minute call or see how we work with founder-led businesses.
Questions people ask
What should a car dealership post on Instagram?
Walkaround reels of new arrivals, owner deliveries (with permission), trade-in and consignment calls, service and detailing before and afters, and event invites. Video first, carousels for full specs.
What do you write in a car delivery post?
Thank the owner by first name if they agree, say what they chose and one reason, and add the dealership name. Leave the price and payment out.
Can a dealership post monthly payments on Instagram?
Only with the full disclosures. A payment amount triggers Regulation Z for finance and Regulation M for leases, which then require the APR and other terms in the same ad.
What are good captions for car sales posts?
Lead with the car and the rare detail, give mileage, spec and history, and end with one next step and the dealership name. Keep "sold" posts to cars you actually sold.
