Kybella marketing: the chin-only label, the 2026 FDA warning, and reels that stay inside it

Kybella marketing has to stay under the chin: the FDA-approved label covers fullness from submental fat in adults, and says use anywhere else "is not recommended". In September 2026 the FDA added a warning after 129 reported adverse events from use outside that area, so posts about "Kybella for jowls", "bra fat" or "knees" are the first thing to take down.
Short answer: Kybella is a prescription drug approved for "improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults". Market only that use, say "up to 6 treatments at least 1 month apart" rather than "one and done", list the common side effects at consult, and never call it a filler. UK and Canadian clinics face prescription-medicine ad limits. General information, not legal advice. Checked November 2026.
What is Kybella approved for, and what did the FDA say in 2026?
The Kybella prescribing information (revised 09/2026) calls it "a cytolytic drug indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults". Its limitation of use: it "is not approved for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region, and such use is not recommended". Up to 6 single treatments may be given at intervals of no less than 1 month. The most common adverse reactions (over 20% of subjects) are swelling, hematoma, pain, numbness, redness and hardness at the injection site.
On 15 September 2026 the FDA approved new label warnings (FDA Drug Safety Communication). Since approval in 2015 it identified 129 cases of adverse events from use outside the submental region, and 117 cases of nodules or masses that had not resolved. The FDA "recommends against this unapproved use" and lists events such as blurred vision after use near the eyes, facial weakness, numbness and muscle and nerve damage.
| Post or claim | Keep or drop | Why |
|---|---|---|
| "Kybella for your double chin" | Keep | That is the approved use |
| "Kybella for jowls, bra fat, knees or arms" | Drop | The label says not recommended; the FDA warned against it in 2026 |
| "One treatment and it is gone" | Drop | The label allows up to 6 treatments at least 1 month apart |
| "Permanent fat removal" | Our cautious reading: drop | Not a phrase you can back for every patient from the label |
| "Kybella filler" | Drop | The label calls it a cytolytic drug, not a filler |
| "No downtime" | Drop | Swelling and bruising are among the most common reactions |
Our cautious reading on why this matters for a clinic and not only for the manufacturer: the FTC treats a false or misleading ad for a drug as unlawful (FTC Act section 12), and a post implying a use the FDA has just warned against is hard to defend.
Which Kybella reels book consults?
All seven are filmed with your own injector. None needs a patient result.
- "Is Kybella a filler?" No: a 20-second explainer on how a cytolytic drug differs from filler.
- "Is Kybella worth it?" Your injector on who is a good candidate for the chin, and who is better sent elsewhere.
- "How many treatments?" Up to 6, at least a month apart, and how your injector decides.
- "What swelling looks like." Filmed on a staff member who chose the treatment and signed a consent: day 1, day 3, day 7.
- "Why we only treat under the chin." Your injector explains the 2026 FDA warning in plain words. This builds trust at a time when patients may have seen the news.
- Kybella vs fat-freezing under the chin. Two ways to treat the same area. The device side is on our CoolSculpting marketing page.
- The mapping step. The injector marks the treatment area before injecting, as the label describes. A quiet, specific clip that shows care.
One hour of injector talk usually gives 12 to 20 short clips. Chin before and after photos need the same light, angle and head position; the state rules are on our med spa before and after rules page.
If your injector will talk on camera, we cut and post the clips on your accounts, live within 48 hours, Entry $2,000 a month for 2 clips a day. See how we work with founder-led businesses or book a 30-minute call.
What changes in the UK and Canada?
The same drug is sold as Belkyra in the UK and Canada. Our cautious reading is that it is treated as a prescription medicine in both, and both countries restrict advertising those to the public.
- UK. Prescription-only medicines may not be advertised to the public (CAP Code rule 12.12), and the ASA says a clinic's own social posts and hashtags naming one are likely to count as ads (ASA on botulinum toxin). Our cautious reading: treat Belkyra the same way, promote a consultation for the area, and do not name the product. The full logic is on can you advertise Botox on Instagram.
- Canada. Advertising a prescription drug to the public is limited to its name, price and quantity (Health Canada). Our cautious reading: no benefit claims for Belkyra in public posts.
Meta also requires ads for cosmetic procedures to target people 18 or older (Meta ad standards, checked November 2026).
Questions people ask
Is Kybella permanent?
Our cautious reading is not to promise permanence in marketing. Say what the label says: up to 6 treatments at least a month apart for fullness under the chin, with results judged at consult.
Is Kybella a filler?
No. Its prescribing information calls it a cytolytic drug, approved to improve the appearance of fullness from fat under the chin in adults.
Can Kybella be used on jowls or other areas?
The label says it is not approved for fat outside the submental region and such use is not recommended. In September 2026 the FDA warned against that use after 129 reported adverse events.
Is Kybella covered by insurance?
Treat it as a cosmetic, self-pay treatment. The IRS says procedures aimed at improving appearance are generally not medical expenses, and Medicare excludes cosmetic surgery and related services (42 CFR 411.15). Do not suggest insurance will pay.
