Podcast clips for social media: how many per episode, how long for each platform, and where to post them
Updated 29 October 2026 · Written by Naman Dhiman, co-founder of SOVE7GN, who runs the campaigns and reviews the clips
Cut 12 to 20 clips from each hour of a talk-heavy podcast episode, keep most of them between 30 and 90 seconds, and post one a day on your own accounts until the next episode comes out. The clips that bring listeners are complete answers to one question, captioned, starting on the first word of the point.
Short answer: One hour of conversation usually gives us 12 to 20 clips. Make each clip one idea, 30 to 90 seconds, vertical, with burned-in captions. YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels both allow up to 3 minutes and LinkedIn up to 15, but shorter clips fit every platform at once. Get your guest's agreement to clips in writing before recording. Post the best ones on your own accounts; spread the rest through other accounts only if you want reach beyond your audience.
How many clips should you get from one podcast episode?
Count from the episode length, then adjust for how much of it is real conversation. One hour of talk-heavy video usually gives us 12 to 20 clips; the other rows below scale that range to the episode length.
| Episode | Typical clip count | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| 30-minute solo episode | 6 to 10 | Fewer if it is read from notes; more if it answers listener questions |
| 60-minute interview | 12 to 20 | More when the guest tells stories; fewer when it is a long product discussion |
| 90-minute deep dive | 18 to 30 | Long technical stretches give fewer usable moments per minute |
| Live recording with audience Q&A | Top of the range | Each audience question is usually one clip |
Not every clip is worth posting. Of the 12 to 20, expect a handful to carry the week. Post the strongest first and the rest in the days after; a clip that flops on day one is often fine on a different platform. The detail on why counts vary is on our page on how many clips you can get from one video.
How long should a podcast clip be on each platform?
The platform maximums are far longer than a good clip needs.
| Platform | Maximum (checked October 2026) | Length that suits a podcast clip |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | Up to 3 minutes (YouTube Help) | 30 to 60 seconds; keep any clip with licensed music under 1 minute |
| Instagram Reels | Up to 3 minutes since January 2025 (Social Media Today; Instagram's help page would not load for us) | 30 to 90 seconds |
| TikTok | Longer uploads allowed; see our clip specs by platform | 30 to 90 seconds |
| Up to 15 minutes (LinkedIn Help) | 45 to 120 seconds for an argument; LinkedIn tolerates a longer setup |
One rule matters more than length on YouTube: a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked globally (YouTube Help). If your episode has an intro song or a guest played a track, cut it out of the clip.
What makes a podcast clip worth posting?
- It starts on the point. Cut the host's question down to its last few words, or drop it and put the question on screen as text.
- It ends when the point lands. Not after the laugh, not after "yeah, totally".
- Captions are burned in. They carry the clip for anyone watching with the sound off, and they cover a weak mic. Our caption guide covers styles and safe zones.
- The speaker fills the frame. For a two-person video podcast, cut to whoever is talking or stack both in a split frame. A wide shot of two people at a desk does not hold attention on a phone.
- The title says the claim. "Why we stopped hiring senior people first" beats "Episode 47 clip".

Do you need your guest's permission to post clips?
Get it in writing before you record, not after the clip goes viral. A guest agreed to a full episode; a clip pulls 45 seconds out of context, which is a different thing for them.
- Put clips in the guest release. One sentence: the episode and short clips from it may be posted on your accounts and shared by others, with the guest's name and likeness.
- Offer the guest the clips. Most guests want to post their own clips, which is free reach for the show.
- Recording consent. Recording laws differ by state. California, for example, makes it an offense to record a confidential communication without the consent of all parties, though not one made in a public gathering (California Penal Code 632, checked October 2026). Pre-show chat that the guest thought was off the record stays off the record.
- Regulated guests. A financial advisor, doctor or lawyer on your show may need their own compliance to approve a clip; ask before the recording.

Should you post clips on your own accounts or on other accounts?
Both, for different jobs.
| Your own accounts | Other people's accounts | |
|---|---|---|
| What it builds | Your following, your profile as the place to find the show | Reach to people who do not know the show yet |
| Which clips | Your best 1 or 2 a day, the ones you want new listeners to judge you by | Volume: many clips, many angles, different captions |
| Who posts | You, an editor, or a retainer agency | Your guest, collab posts, or a clipping network |
| Risk | Low, you control everything | Clips posted by others need rules: what may be said, which hooks, which links |
Start with your own accounts. Add other accounts once you know which clip types work. Our podcast clipping agency page explains how the two models differ in practice.
We do both. The retainer cuts and posts daily clips on your own accounts: 2 example clips approved first, then live within 48 hours, from $2,000 a month for 2 clips a day. Our CPM network has 500+ clippers posting on their own accounts across 7 platforms, from a $5,500 pool plus a 15% management fee; a person checks every network clip within 24 hours and about 1 in 6 gets rejected, and rejected views never count. Questions people ask
How many clips should I make from a podcast?
One hour of conversation usually gives 12 to 20 usable clips. Post the best one or two a day on your own accounts until the next episode, and move on rather than recycling weak clips.
How long should podcast clips be?
Most work at 30 to 90 seconds: long enough to finish one point, short enough to suit every platform. Shorts and Reels allow up to 3 minutes, but a longer clip has to earn every second.
Where should I post podcast clips?
On YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok for reach, and on LinkedIn if your listeners are professionals. Use the same clip on each with a caption written for that platform.
Do I need permission to post podcast clips of my guest?
Put clip use in the guest release before recording. It avoids an awkward takedown request later and lets you send the guest clips to post themselves.
