Clipping on X (Twitter): limits, payouts and what works

Updated 15 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders

This page is for clippers who post on X and for creators and brands deciding whether X belongs in a clipping campaign. X changed how it pays creators in September 2026, so a lot of advice online is now out of date.

Short answer: on X, accounts without Premium can post videos up to 140 seconds; Premium accounts can upload up to 4 hours on the web and iOS. X retired Creator Revenue Sharing on September 7, 2026 and replaced it with Original Content Rewards, which excludes copied, lightly edited and aggregated content. Reposted clips no longer earn from X. Clips with your own commentary, sent into live conversations, are what work.

X's video limits

X is the only major platform where your subscription changes how long a clip can be. From X Help (checked October 2026):

AccountMax video lengthNotes
No Premium140 seconds (2 min 20 s)Same on all apps
Premium, web and iOSUp to 4 hours1080p up to 2 hours; videos over 2 hours must be 720p; up to 16GB
Premium, AndroidUp to 10 minutesPer the same help page

Post text is limited to 280 characters, or up to 25,000 for Premium "longer posts," per X Help. X notes that accounts mentioned after the first 280 characters of a longer post aren't notified, so tag people early. For the other six platforms, see clip specs by platform.

Creator Revenue Sharing is gone: what replaced it

X's payout program changed in September 2026. Here is the timeline, from X's help pages and reporting by MediaPost (checked October 2026):

To be eligible for Original Content Rewards, X's help page lists:

Meeting these doesn't guarantee approval. You apply in Creator Studio and can appeal once.

What counts as original on X

This is the change that matters most for clippers. X's help page says these don't qualify (checked October 2026):

Doesn't qualifyExample
Copied contentA clip downloaded and re-posted as is
Minimally modified contentThe same clip with a filter, a speed change or a text overlay
Aggregated contentA thread of other people's clips with no new angle
Cross-platform repostsA TikTok clip someone else made, uploaded to X

X says original content includes commentary or analysis that adds real perspective, and media you created yourself. To share someone else's post without adding anything, X points you to its repost tools rather than re-uploading.

So a plain clip account on X earns nothing from X itself now. A clip with a sharp written take, your own edit and context can still qualify. Clippers paid by a campaign earn from the campaign's per-view pool, which doesn't depend on X's program.

What clips work on X

X is a conversation platform first. Clips do best when they plug into something people are already talking about.

What tends to fall flat: vertical clips with TikTok-style text that covers the frame, trend audio that means nothing on X, and generic "wait for it" hooks.

How often to post

There's no published X rule on frequency. A practical rhythm for a clip account is several posts a day, spread across the hours your audience is online, with most of them tied to live topics. Don't post the same clip twice in a day. Reply to comments on your clips; on X, the conversation is part of the content. For your own brand account, 1 to 3 clips a day alongside normal posts is a sensible start.

X in a clipping campaign

X reaches people who don't spend time on TikTok, so it's worth including for podcasts, founders, finance, sports and news-heavy niches. SOVE7GN campaigns post across 7 platforms: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, X, Snapchat, Facebook and LinkedIn. Every clip is checked by a person within 24 hours, so a lazy re-upload doesn't get paid. For how platforms compare, see clipping platforms and TikTok clipping.

Questions people ask

Can you still make money clipping on X?

Not from plain reposts. X's Original Content Rewards excludes copied, lightly edited and aggregated content. Clippers can still be paid per view by a campaign.

How long can a video be on X?

140 seconds without Premium. With Premium, up to 4 hours on the web and iOS, and up to 10 minutes on Android, per X Help.

What replaced X Creator Revenue Sharing?

Original Content Rewards, which opened to applicants on September 8, 2026, the day after Creator Revenue Sharing ended.

Do I need Premium to clip on X?

Not to post. You need Premium to upload clips longer than 140 seconds and to qualify for Original Content Rewards.
