YouTube clipping, explained
Updated 23 October 2026 · Written by Reyansh Juneja and Naman Dhiman, the co-founders of SOVE7GN, who run the campaigns and review the clips
"YouTube clipping" means three different things depending on who's searching. Here's each one, and when you'd use it.
Short answer: YouTube clipping can mean (1) YouTube's built-in Clip feature, which lets viewers share a 5 to 60 second section of a video or stream; (2) cutting your long YouTube videos into Shorts; or (3) clipping campaigns, where clippers post moments from a YouTuber's videos on their own accounts across TikTok, Reels and Shorts. For growth, the second and third matter most.
1. YouTube's Clip feature
Viewers can select a short section of an eligible video or livestream and share it as a link. It's handy for sharing, and it shows you which moments people care about. It doesn't create a vertical Short. See Twitch clips vs YouTube clips.
2. Turning long videos into Shorts
This is the most common meaning. Shorts sit on the same channel as your long videos, so a viewer who likes a Short can go straight to the full video.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Open on the payoff | Start with your intro |
| Crop to vertical with captions | Post widescreen with black bars |
| One idea per Short | Squeeze a whole segment in |
| Link the related long video where you can | Leave viewers with nowhere to go |

3. YouTube clipping campaigns
Big YouTubers increasingly pay clippers to post moments from their videos on other accounts. Each clipper's page reaches a different audience, and viewers search for the creator afterwards. Campaigns are usually paid per 1,000 views on approved clips.
