Clipping brief template
Updated 10 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders
The brief is the single most important document in a clipping campaign. A clear one means good clips and quick reviews. A vague one means arguments over rejected clips. Copy this template and fill it in.
Short answer: a good clipping brief covers seven things: the source videos, the moments you want, the audio, required tags and credits, length and format, what's off-limits, and how clips are paid and reviewed. Add 2 example clips. Keep it to one page.
The template
| Section | What to write |
|---|---|
| 1. Campaign | Who it's for, what it's promoting, start and end dates |
| 2. Source videos | Links to every video clippers can use. Nothing else is allowed |
| 3. Best moments | 10 to 20 timestamps you know are strong |
| 4. Audio | Which audio to use. For music: the official audio only |
| 5. Tags and credits | Required handles, hashtags, song or show name, link if relevant |
| 6. Format | Vertical 9:16, length range, captions on, no watermarks from other apps |
| 7. Off-limits | Topics, people, unreleased material, anything out of context |
| 8. Disclosure | Ad labels where your region or platform requires them |
| 9. Pay | Rate per 1,000 views, minimum views, maximum per clip, budget |
| 10. Review | What gets a clip rejected, and how fast you review |
| 11. Examples | 2 example clips that show the style |

- Tags and credits: Artist handle and song title on screen or in the caption.
- Format: 9:16, 7 to 30 seconds, captions on.
- Off-limits: The unreleased track playing at 4:20 in the studio video. Anything mocking the featured artist.
- Disclosure: Use the platform's paid partnership label where required.
- Pay: Rate per 1,000 views as listed, paid on approved clips only.
- Review: Within 24 hours. Rejected for rule breaks, sudden view spikes, engagement that doesn't match views, wrong audio.
- Examples: Two clips attached.
Tips for writing rules clippers follow
- Be specific. "Use the official audio" beats "use good audio".
- Explain the why for unusual rules. Clippers follow rules they understand.
- Show examples. Two clips teach more than a page of text.
- Keep it short. One page. Long briefs don't get read.
- Say what gets rejected. Then rejections feel fair.
Questions people ask
Do I need a brief for a small campaign?
Yes. Even a 10-line brief saves you from rejecting half the clips.
Should I let clippers find their own moments?
Yes, but give them your best timestamps as a starting point. Some of the best clips come from moments you didn't spot.
How long should a clip be?
As short as it can be while the point lands. For music, long enough for the hook. Set a range in the brief.
