Clipping campaigns for mobile apps
Updated 15 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders
This page is for app founders and growth teams who want installs from short-form video, not just views. Clipping can deliver both. The hard part is proving it, because app stores share far less data than a website does. Here's what to clip and how to set up tracking before the first clip goes out.
Short answer: clipping can drive app installs, but you'll measure it in blocks, not per clip. Use a separate App Store campaign link per channel (Apple credits first-time downloads within 24 hours of the click), Google Play's install referrer on Android, and a custom offer code in the clip. Then compare installs during the campaign against a baseline. SOVE7GN pools start at $5,500 plus a 15% fee.
Clip formats that work for apps
The best app clips show the app doing something in a real situation, within the first 2 seconds. Match the format to what your app does.
| App type | Format that works | Example hook |
|---|---|---|
| Games | Gameplay moment with a fail or a win | "Level 40 and this happens" |
| Finance and budgeting | A real number on screen, before and after | "I tracked every coffee for a month" |
| Productivity and AI tools | Screen recording solving a pain in real time | "This took me 3 hours. Now it takes 20 seconds" |
| Social and dating | Reactions and stories from users | "What happened after my first match" |
| Health and fitness | A routine with the app open beside it | "Day 1 vs day 30" |
If your team records podcasts, demos or founder videos, those are clip material too. One hour of talk-heavy video usually gives 12 to 20 clips. See clipping for SaaS for the B2B version of this.
How to track installs from clips
No single method catches everything, so stack three or four. Here is what each one tells you.
| Method | What it tracks | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| App Store campaign link | Impressions, page views, downloads and sales per campaign token (Apple) | Shown only once a metric reaches 5; data appears after 24 hours |
| Google Play install referrer | The referrer URL and click time behind each Android install (Android developers) | Your app has to read it; needs a Play Console account |
| Custom offer code | Redemptions of a named code such as CLIPS30 (Apple offer codes) | Apple's offer codes apply to auto-renewable subscriptions |
| "How did you hear about us?" | Self-reported source at signup | People forget or guess |
| Baseline comparison | Installs during the campaign vs the weeks before | Doesn't say which clip worked |
Apple's details worth knowing: a campaign link carries a `ct` token you name (up to 30 characters), and a user who downloads within 24 hours of clicking counts as a first-time download from that campaign. If someone clicks two campaign links, the most recent one gets the credit. Custom offer codes can be up to 64 characters, allow up to 25,000 redemptions per batch, and expire after at most six months.
Why per-clip attribution doesn't work
Most clippers can't put a link on every clip, and most viewers don't click. They see the app, then search the store by name later. That download shows up as organic, not as a campaign install.
So plan to judge a clipping campaign the way you'd judge a billboard. Track store search installs, total daily installs and code redemptions across the campaign window, against a baseline. More on what to measure is on clipping campaign metrics.
An illustration, not a forecast: if daily installs average 300 for four weeks, then 450 during a 30-day campaign, that's about 4,500 extra installs. On a $6,325 SOVE7GN campaign, that's about $1.41 per extra install. Compare that with your paid install cost on clipping vs paid ads.
Setting up the campaign
- Make one campaign link per platform (TikTok, Instagram, Shorts) for any accounts that can carry a link.
- Create one offer code just for clips, and keep it short enough to say out loud.
- Record the baseline: daily installs and store search installs for the previous 4 weeks.
- Give clippers a library: screen recordings, gameplay, demo videos and any founder footage.
- Write the rules: no false claims about what the app does, and for finance apps, no earnings promises.
- Require a paid-promotion disclosure in each clip. The FTC says it should be in the video itself. General information, not legal advice.
Budget and plans
For reach across other accounts, CPM clipping is the fit. You fund a pool from $5,500 plus a 15% fee ($6,325 in total), clips go out across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, X, Snapchat, Facebook and LinkedIn, and clippers are paid only for approved views. At $1.50 per 1,000 views, a $5,500 pool pays for up to about 3.7 million approved views.
For your app's own accounts, a retainer posts 2 clips a day from $2,000 a month (Entry) or 4 a day for $4,000 (Growth). Many app teams start with their own accounts, then add a CPM push around a launch or a big update.
Questions people ask
Can clipping drive app installs?
Yes, mostly through people who see the app in a clip and search for it later. Measure it with a baseline comparison, campaign links and offer codes rather than per-clip clicks.
How do I track installs from TikTok clips?
Use an App Store campaign link and a Play referrer link wherever a link can go, a clip-only offer code, and a signup survey. Then compare total installs against your pre-campaign baseline.
Is clipping cheaper than app install ads?
It can be, but it depends on your app and your current ad costs. Work out your cost per extra install from the baseline lift and compare it with your paid install cost.
Which apps work best for clipping?
Apps you can show working in a few seconds: games, consumer finance, AI tools and fitness. Apps that need a long explanation are better suited to founder and demo clips.
