Instagram trial reels: what they are, why some get no views, and a test plan for a business account

Updated 29 October 2026 · Written by Naman Dhiman, co-founder of SOVE7GN, who runs the campaigns and reviews the clips

A trial reel is an Instagram reel that is shown to people who do not follow you first, stays off your grid and Reels tab, and only reaches your followers if you share it or let Instagram share it after it performs. Businesses should use trial reels to test a new opening, format or offer on strangers before it sits on the profile their buyers check.

Short answer: Instagram launched trial reels in December 2024. A trial reel goes to non-followers first, you see its views, likes, comments and shares after about 24 hours, and you can share it to everyone by hand or let Instagram share it automatically based on its views in the first 72 hours. If a trial reel gets no views, the usual causes are that it is too early, the reel or account is not eligible for recommendations, or the topic is one Instagram limits. Checked October 2026.

How do Instagram trial reels work?

Everything below comes from Instagram's creators blog post on trial reels and Meta's announcement, published 10 December 2024 and updated 26 June 2025 (both checked October 2026).

QuestionWhat Instagram says
Who sees it first?"Trial reels will be shown to non-followers first."
Do my followers see it?Not in their Feed or Reels tab, unless you share it to everyone
Is it on my profile? No. It stays off your main grid and Reels tab until you share it
When do I get results?About 24 hours after posting, in the reels viewer: views, likes, comments and shares
How does it go to followers? You share it to everyone yourself, or choose automatic sharing based on the views it gets in the first 72 hours
Who can use it?"Eligible creators"; Instagram sends you to its Help Center for the criteria

Instagram's Help Center page with the eligibility criteria would not load for us when we checked, and third-party guides disagree on the follower minimum, so we are not quoting one. If you do not see the trial option when you share a reel, your account is not eligible yet.

Why is my trial reel not getting views?

Trial reels draw from the same recommendation system as every other reel. Instagram's recommendations and originality post says eligible content is first shown to a small audience and that some content is not recommended at all. That gives five likely causes, in the order we would check them:

  1. It is too early. Results show after about 24 hours. A reel checked after two hours tells you little.
  2. The account cannot be recommended right now. Instagram says accounts that repeatedly break guidelines, or keep reposting others' content without changes, may be ineligible for recommendations. Check Account Status in your settings.
  3. The reel is not eligible. Visible watermarks, footage already posted on Instagram, and reels that are low-resolution, muted, bordered or mostly text are shown less, per Instagram Ranking Explained.
  4. The topic is limited. Instagram's recommendation guidelines avoid recommending regulated products including pharmaceutical drugs, and the originality post lists exaggerated health claims among content that may be excluded. Our cautious reading for med spas: a trial reel built around a prescription brand name, or a promise like "melts fat in one session," is the kind most likely to sit still. Lead with the consult question instead.
  5. The opening lost the test audience. Strangers do not know you. A trial reel that starts with "Hey guys, so today..." gives them nothing to stay for.

Do trial reels actually work for a business?

They work as a test, not as a growth trick. The value is that a failed experiment does not sit on the grid a buyer scrolls before booking a consult or a showing. They do not replace posting volume: a trial reel still has to win its first audience, and the reels that fail there fail whether or not they were trials.

Where they are most useful for founder-led accounts:

Where they are not useful: posts for existing clients (holiday hours, a new location) that you want followers to see at once. Post those normally.

A two-week trial reel test plan

This plan tests openings, not topics, because the opening is what decides whether strangers stay. It uses one recorded session, so it costs one filming hour.

DayMed spa injectorLuxury agentWhat you record
1Film one 20-minute consult-style Q&A: 5 questions patients askFilm one 20-minute listing walk-and-talk with 5 points a buyer asks aboutThe raw session
2Cut question 1 three ways: question first, answer first, myth firstCut the kitchen point three ways: price first, feature first, buyer question first3 versions of one clip
2Post all three as trial reels at the same hourSamePost time
3Check views and shares at about 24 hoursSameViews and shares per version
5Check again after 72 hours; share the winner to everyoneSameWhich opening won
6 to 13Cut questions 2 to 5 in the winning opening style; post them as normal reelsSame for the other 4 pointsViews on normal reels
14Compare normal-reel views to your last 10 reelsSameChange in typical views

Judge on shares and views together. A trial reel with fewer views but more shares often makes the better normal reel, in our experience. Keep one variable per test. If you change the opening and the topic at once, you will not know which one worked.

Two cautions. For med spas, a reel showing a patient needs that patient's written consent whether it is a trial or not; the US and UK rules are on med spa before and after rules. For agents, a trial reel promoting a listing is still an ad under most state rules, so the brokerage line still applies; see realtor social media rules.

Where do trial reels fit in a weekly plan?

Run one test a week and post the rest normally. The bigger driver of views is how many good attempts you make, which we cover in how to get more views on Reels. If you record long videos but never have time to cut them, we turn them into daily clips on your own accounts and can run the trial versions for you. One hour of talk-heavy video usually gives us 12 to 20 clips, and 2 example clips are approved by you before anything goes live. See how we work with founder-led businesses or book a 30-minute call.

Questions people ask

Do trial reels go to your followers?

Not at first. Instagram shows them to non-followers first, and followers only see them after you share the reel to everyone or Instagram shares it automatically based on its first 72 hours.

Do trial reels show on your profile?

No. A trial reel stays off your main grid and Reels tab until you share it to everyone.

Why are my trial reels getting 0 views?

Usually because it is under 24 hours, the account or reel is not eligible for recommendations (watermarks, reposts, guideline strikes), or the topic is one Instagram limits, such as prescription drugs or exaggerated health claims.

Do trial reels get more views than normal reels?

Not by design. They are shown to a different audience first, non-followers, and still have to win that first test. Use them to find the opening that works, then post in that style normally.
