How to get more views on Reels as a business owner: what moves the number and what does not

To get more views on Reels as a business owner, post more original videos of you talking, make the first two seconds earn the next ten, and keep every reel clean of watermarks, borders and reposts, because Instagram says it shows less of those. Hashtag piles and engagement pods do not fix low views; more good attempts do, since even strong accounts only break out on a small share of reels.
Short answer: Instagram tests each eligible reel on a small group of people who may not follow you, then shows the winners to more. So views come from attempts that pass that first test. Film yourself answering one buyer question per clip, open on the answer, post original files with no watermark, and post more often. In our October 2026 research on 31 luxury agents, the median best reel got about 29,000 views against about 6,800 for a typical one.
How does Instagram decide who sees a reel?
Instagram has said it plainly. In its recommendations and originality post (April 2024, checked October 2026), eligible content is "shown to a small audience that we think will enjoy it," whether or not they follow you, and the posts that do well there reach wider audiences. In Instagram Ranking Explained (May 2023), Adam Mosseri lists the main signals for Reels, roughly in order: the viewer's own activity, the viewer's history with the account, information about the reel, and information about the person who posted it.
The practical reading for a founder: you cannot control who Instagram tests a reel on, but you can control whether the people in that test keep watching. That is decided in the first seconds.
What actually moves Reel views for a founder-led account?
| Lever | What to do | Why it works | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| The opening | Start on the answer or the claim, not a greeting or a logo | The test audience decides fast; nothing else matters if they swipe | Our view from cutting founder clips |
| Originality | Post your own footage, exported clean, with no other app's watermark | Instagram says watermarked, low-resolution, bordered, muted and already-posted reels are shown less | Instagram Ranking Explained |
| Mostly talk, not mostly text | Put the point in your voice; use on-screen text as a caption, not the whole reel | Instagram names "majority text" reels as less likely to be recommended | Same |
| More attempts | Post more reels, not longer ones | Breakouts are rare and uneven, so more tries means more chances | Our research below |
| Trial reels | Test a new hook on non-followers before it hits your grid | Trial reels go to non-followers first | Instagram creators blog, Dec 2024 |
| Clean account | Avoid repeated reposts and engagement bait | Instagram says it limits clickbait and engagement bait, and accounts that mostly repost | Recommendations and originality |
We have no published Instagram number for the ideal length or the exact second a viewer leaves, so we will not give you one. What we see when we cut founder video: a clip that answers one question completely, starting with the answer, holds better than a clip that builds up to it.
Why does posting more matter so much?
Because the gap between a normal reel and a best reel is large, and you cannot tell in advance which one will break out. In our own research (October 2026) on 31 luxury real estate agents in the US and Canada with 5.8K to 192K followers, the median typical reel got about 6,800 views and the median best reel about 29,000. 13 of the 31 had a reel do 5x or more their normal views, and 9 of 31 had one do 10x or more.
Two things follow. First, an account posting three reels a week gets fewer draws than one posting two a day, so the breakouts come slower. Second, a single flat reel tells you very little: judge a format after 10 to 20 tries, not one. That is our opinion from the spread above, not a figure Instagram publishes.
The cheapest source of more attempts is video you already have. A 30-minute podcast, webinar or walkthrough already holds several complete answers. One hour of talk-heavy long video usually gives us 12 to 20 clips.
What does not move Reel views?
| Tactic | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Piles of popular hashtags | Instagram said in December 2025 it would cap hashtags at five per reel or post, and Mosseri has said hashtags do not improve visibility | Social Media Today, 18 Dec 2025 |
| Engagement pods | Likes and comments from other business owners, not from buyers | Our cautious reading below |
| Reposting your own reel from a second account | Instagram recommends the original when copies match, so the copy rarely adds reach | Recommendations and originality |
| Re-uploading a TikTok with its watermark | Watermarked reels are shown less | Instagram Ranking Explained |
| "Comment YES for the guide" on every reel | Instagram lists engagement bait as content it may not recommend | Recommendations and originality |
On pods, our cautious reading: Instagram ranks Reels partly on each viewer's own activity, so a burst of likes from people who will never buy from you teaches the system nothing useful about your real audience, and comment prompts can count as engagement bait. Neither is worth the time.
Hashtags still have a job: they label the reel. Use up to five specific ones (city, neighborhood, treatment, property type). The full reasoning for agents is on our page on real estate hashtags for Reels.
Second account or clippers: which adds more views?
A second account you run yourself only helps if it posts different cuts. Posting the same file twice gets the copy treated as a duplicate. The two setups that add real attempts:
- More clips on your own account. Editors cut your long videos into daily clips and post them on your accounts. Our Entry plan is 2 clips a day for $2,000 a month; Growth is 4 a day for $4,000.
- Clippers on their own accounts. Our CPM clipping uses a pool from $5,500 plus a 15% management fee, and 500+ clippers post clips on their own accounts across 7 platforms. Each clipper needs a distinct cut and hook, or Instagram favors the original and the copies stall. The rules are on our page about Instagram's originality rules for clips.
On a 3-month plan at Entry or above we guarantee 1,000,000 views; if you fall short, we keep posting at our own cost (terms). See how we work with founder-led businesses or book a 30-minute call and bring one long video.
What should a founder change this week?
- Pick five questions buyers ask you on calls. Film one take answering each, 30 to 60 seconds, starting with the answer.
- Export clean files and post them as Reels, not reposts from TikTok.
- Put one new opening style through Instagram trial reels before it goes on your grid.
- Cut five more clips from the last long video you recorded.
- Judge after 10 to 20 reels, not after one.

Questions people ask
How do you get more views on Reels after posting?
You mostly cannot. Instagram tests a reel on a small audience soon after you post it, and that test decides the reach. Share it to your story and answer comments, but put the effort into the next reel.
Do hashtags help Reels get more views?
Not much. Instagram's head has said hashtags do not improve visibility, and Instagram is capping them at five. Use a few specific ones as labels.
Why are my Reels not getting views from non-followers?
Check Account Status for recommendation limits, then check the reels themselves: watermarks, borders, muted audio, mostly text, or reposted footage are all shown less. If they are clean, the openings are usually the problem.
Why are my Reels not getting views anymore?
A drop across every reel at once usually points to the account (a recommendation limit, or a run of reposts). A drop on some reels is normal: even accounts that break out often have a typical reel far below their best.
