Short-form video hooks that stop the scroll

Updated 10 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders

On short-form, the first two seconds decide whether anyone watches the rest. The good news is that most great hooks are already in your footage. You just have to start the clip in the right place.

Short answer: open on the payoff, not the setup. Start the clip at the strongest line, the biggest reaction or the most surprising fact, and give only as much context as the viewer needs to follow. Then make sure captions carry the hook for people watching with the sound off.

Ten hook formats

1. The bold claim

Start on the most arguable sentence. "Most podcasts are clipped completely wrong."

2. The answer first

Lead with the answer, then explain. Works for coaches, doctors and educators.

3. The number

A specific, surprising figure. Make sure it's true and you can share it.

4. The reaction

Open on a face: shock, laughter, disbelief. Then show what caused it.

5. The mid-story drop-in

Start in the middle of a story at its most tense point.

6. The question

A question your audience is already asking, said on camera.

7. The disagreement

Two people, two views, right away.

8. The hook of the song

For music: start on the chorus or the most quotable line. See hook formats for music clips.

9. The premise

For comedy: open on the strangest part of the setup, never the punchline.

10. The before and after

Show the result, then how you got there.

Mistakes that kill a clip

MistakeFix
A slow intro or logoCut straight to the moment
Setup before payoffStart nearer the payoff
No captionsCaption every word; many people watch muted
Captions spoiling the payoffShow captions word by word
A misleading hookViewers notice and leave; it also hurts trust

Testing hooks

Cut the same moment with two different openings and post both. Keep what wins. Over a few weeks you'll learn which hook styles your audience prefers.

Questions people ask

How long should a hook be?

The first one to three seconds. The viewer should know why to keep watching before then.

Do hooks need text on screen?

Not always, but a short line of text helps viewers watching muted.

Is clickbait a good hook?

A hook that the clip doesn't deliver on loses viewers and trust. Use the real strongest moment.

Can someone cut hooks for me?

Yes. Our editors cut and post clips on your accounts every day, from $2,000 a month.
