What is CPM in clipping?
Updated 10 October 2026 · Written by the SOVE7GN founders
CPM is the number everyone in clipping talks about. It's simple, but it's easy to compare the wrong things.
Short answer: CPM stands for cost per mille, meaning cost per 1,000 views. In clipping it's the rate clippers are paid for every 1,000 approved views on their clips. At a $1 CPM, a clip with 100,000 approved views earns $100. Public clipping campaigns mostly pay between $0.20 and $6 CPM, with most near $1.
The formula
Earnings = approved views ÷ 1,000 × CPM
| Approved views | At $0.50 CPM | At $1 CPM | At $2 CPM |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10,000 | $5 | $10 | $20 |
| 100,000 | $50 | $100 | $200 |
| 1,000,000 | $500 | $1,000 | $2,000 |
Typical rates
Public campaigns mostly pay $0.20 to $6 per 1,000 verified views, with most near $1, according to OpenClip's rate survey (checked August 2026).
Clipping CPM vs ad CPM
| Clipping CPM | Ad CPM | |
|---|---|---|
| Paid to | Clippers | The ad platform |
| What counts | Views on approved clips | Impressions, which can be a quick scroll past |
| Looks like | Normal content | A labelled ad |
| Targeting | Broad | Precise |
So a clipping CPM and an ad CPM aren't a like-for-like comparison. See clipping vs paid ads.
The CPM a brand actually pays
If an agency runs the campaign, the brand pays the clipper CPM plus a fee. At SOVE7GN, the fee is 15% on the pool, so a $1 clipper CPM costs the brand $1.15 per 1,000 approved views, all in. Try different numbers in the budget calculator.
Watch for
- CPM on unverified views. A low CPM on fake views is expensive.
- No caps. Without a maximum per clip, one clip can drain the pool.
- Unclear rejection rules. Clippers need to know what won't be paid.
Questions people ask
Is a higher CPM better?
For clippers, yes. For brands, a higher CPM attracts better clippers faster but buys fewer views per dollar. The right rate depends on niche and rules.
Do views from all platforms count?
That's set by each campaign. Our CPM campaigns count approved views from TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts, X, Snapchat, Facebook and LinkedIn.
What's RPM?
Revenue per mille: what a creator earns per 1,000 views from a platform's own payouts. It's a different thing from a campaign's CPM.
Who sets the CPM?
The campaign owner. On a SOVE7GN campaign, we recommend a rate and agree it with you.
